I have three keys for my car. Two for the trunk/glove box and one for the ignition/doors. Both trunk/glove box keys work on each lock but the ignition/doors key only works in the ignition. Two of the keys have to be the originals as they war worn flat with no detail whatsoever. I know the doors are original to the car so could it be that the key is just worn enough to not work in the door locks?
I know you can order new keys but how do you get the code when they are so worn? Do I really have to take the door apart to read the code on the door lock cylinder?
I have two keys both Ford, one a model H50 (oval) that only opens the trunk, and one model H51 (sort of squared hexagon) that only opens the doors and works the ignition. On one side of the head they have the Ford logo, on the reverse the H50 says “FAMILY OF FINE KEYS” and on the reverse the H51 says “FAMILY OF FINE CARS”. The shafts aren’t even the same shape, so no way the trunk lock could even fit in the doors or ignition cylinder, or vice-versa.
i have a badly cut key (made locally)that opens doors and works on ignition, but only one side works to start. If it won’t turn the ignition, i pull it out, rotate it half a turn, and it works.
ons dide could be worn, and the other side better.
WCCC sells keys “By the numbers” but yes, you have to remove the door lock to get the numbers. You might get lucky at Ford dealer and have a copy made that actually works.
I saw this on WCCC site. It sounds like you have a worn key. You are going to have to pull you door panel on the drivers side to get the code. WCCC cuts the keys by the numbers. Check the link it should answer you question. A good locksmith could cut a key in the field but I feel it might cost a good bit and you still would not have the code.

If you have the original owner’s manual, there should be ign & door key numbers inside the front cover. If so, then you won’t have to pull out the drivers side door lock. Just a suggestion. John
Only one side of the key actually does anything inside the lock. I used to get my keys cut so one side fit one Ford, and the other side fit a different Ford. I little notch in the side helped me keep track of things.
