So since we often hear that Cougar shocks are longer than 'stang shocks (but many of us run the 'stang ones anyway, myself included), has anyone figured out what the right shocks are that are available today? Like in KYB GR-2 (now called Excel-G)? KYB calls for 343219 for both applications and that is what I am running. I just wondered if the car could/would benefit from a set or rear shocks that are the correct length. Suspension travel would be better but I figure the weight of the car makes the shocks not at full extension already, so the only real benefit I see would be on rebound. Any thoughts and/or correct length shock info?
I am running a 3/4" “Stam Bar”, this is an adjustable type. I run it at it’s lightest setting. I might have gone with 5/8" is I were to do it all over again. I run a 1" sway bar in the front. They do make a big difference.
Looking at the WCCC site, looks to me like they sell the Excel-G (what was GR2), Gas-A-Just and a “HP” shock from Scott Drake. All show application as both Cougar and Mustang. So based on that I’d say they are not selling a correct length shock for Cougar (assuming that the story of Cougar being longer is in fact the case). Seems as though for all intents and purposes the 'stang shocks are fine even if our cars came with longer shocks.
At this point I would be interested in some measured data on original shocks or other facts. With a correct length I would think a proper shock with stud ends could be identified…
So there you have it! Someone had pointed out somewhere along the way that Cougar rear shocks are longer than 'stang rear shocks. BUT, no one knows of a source for a Cougar-correct rear shock!
