Leaf spring eye bolts

I’m replacing the leaf springs on my 68 GT. The springs on there don’t appear to be original (no part numbers) and I know the rear suspension was messed with some time before I got the car in '95. I have a couple questions:

First question, which bolts/nuts should I use on the front eye of the leaf springs?

On the left are the bolts/nuts that I removed. The bolts measure 4 3/4", have coarse threads, are pointed, and both the bolts and nuts are flanged.

On the right are the repro bolts/nuts from WCCC. The bolts are 5", fine threads, flat ends, and unflanged.

The AMK website seems to suggest the coarse thread/flanged bolts based on assembly manual part numbers but I know that things were changed.

Second question, my assembly manual calls out one spec to torque the bolt head and a second spec for the nut. How does that work? Which is correct?

The pointed ones are a lot easier to install.

The pair on the left are the original bolts. Coarse threads and flanged locking nuts. AMK sells new ones like that. Be sure and put grease on the bolts before installing them.

Thank you! I will reuse the flanged set.

Any information on the torque specs would be appreciated. The assembly manual is confusing.

I’d go with 60 lb ft as it satisfies both specs.

Thanks for the reply.

I found a chart in my shop manual that seems to suggest that the two torque values apply only to the Fairlane, Falcon, and Montego. I guess it got into the Mustang/Cougar assembly manual by mistake.

30-50 LB Ft is correct. No grease on the threads.
