Looking at putting a set of Legendary Wheels 15x7 (4.25bs) on my new to me 68 and was wondering about tire sizes. I can get the “standard” 225/60R15 for BFG T/A’s but if I want to run Cooper Cobra’s I am limited to:
215/65R15 (Limited availability)
225/70R15
235/60R15
Has anyone run any of these on a stock 67/68 without any issues? I’m not looking for the biggest tire or anything, just something that will fit without any issues and look decent. I may consider doing an Arning drop in the future but currently the car is stock.
Here’s my 68 with 215/65R15 on 15x7 fronts, and 245/60R15 on 15x8 rears. It does have the Shelby drop and coil-overs, so not exactly stock height but I don’t have it slammed either. I wouldn’t go beyond 225 in the front on a 67-68, you’re likely to have rubbing issues. I didn’t go with Cooper Cobras because of their limited sizes in the range I needed.
Yep 215/65R15 should be perfect all the way around. They’re the Wheel Vintiques styled steels that are sadly no longer sold once Coker Tire bought them out.
No rub detected. Per memory the total tire height is about half an inch shorter that stock. The wheel arch height is still within the Moog specs despite worn springs. Wheels are 7” wide TT2’s with standard backspace.
On a past 68 I managed 235/60R14s on original SSWs with 1” Arning drop and 1” lowering springs. This worked too but some clearances like UCA were pretty low.
Rear is 245/45R17, OE suspension and heaps of clearance. Mind your speedo gear.
Have been running 15x7 Legendary Wheels since 2016 and the 1st set of tires were P215/65R15’s BFG T/A’s. When I replaced them (getting some cracks at 8 plus years) I looked at the Cooper Cobra and same issue of limited sizes. So I went with another set of BFG’s I’d had some issue with the front P215/65R15’s hitting the front wheel moldings when I got a little playful so I went with P215/60R15 on the front when I replaced in 2025. Front end is dropped about an 1" and rear I have competition handling springs. No issues on the front now. Pic is after tires were replaced.
