Let's talk about door glass

I have '70 tinted/sun-x, vert/coupe door glass with the usual scratches. I have found some services/shops that remove/polish out the scratches but they can only polish to within 1/2 inch from the edges. Talk about pricey $$!! So then the conversation goes to repro. glass. Pros/ cons of repro glass. I heard the repro glass isn’t the correct thickness. Is that with all repro glass? Dynacorn is making glass. Is it any better?

I’m a big fan of vintage glass. I’ve had broken windshields on my 2015 SHO and my wife’s 2020 CX-9 from things that bounced off my Cougars with original glass without so much as a ding. I’ve also seen imperfections and surface issues with cars with newer glass, but my old stuff still polishes up nicely.

If I ever find original 70 bolt in glass with the brackets, I’ll buy. I converted one of my former 69s with the glue in glass when I was in college, and never looked back.

I just bought door glass for my 70 CJ project.
I have 2 sets of original glass if anybody is interested. It was just not perfect for the CJ.
The repop glass seems like it is fine. Fit the brackets & the doors fine. I did a bit of looking around & found the glass for a great price compared to the prices of Cougar vendors & others.

I bought one of those $6000 machines and rarely can you get 1/2" from the edge and curved glass is difficult at best… Very time consuming and the deeper the scratch the deeper you have to sand / sand / polish. This creates distortions in the glass. I had to finally admit that once tempered glass is heavily scratched it is ruined.

If you can feel the scratches with your finger nail, it’s a forever scratch. It’s hard to find someone if not impossible who will even attempt to polish glass in our old cougars…

No one has really commented on the repro glass. So is there more than one manufacturer of the repro glass? Pros and cons of manufacturers? What is the best repro glass? Are there companies that do the correct style etching?

I bought my windshield and both door glass from here: https://ecsauto.com/ . I filled out a form that I believe they emailed to me. Click on the Ford catalog and go to the page inside the back cover. Good luck. :stuck_out_tongue:
