So, I try to collect as many Cougar rarities as I can find and afford.
I do have one of the wooden “G” type shifter handles, and I was going to put it in my 67 XR7…Recently I saw a printed ad for the whole collection of shifter handles, and so now I am on the hunt!
I tried Ebay for giggles, and found 2 copies of the Shelby “Cobra” wooden shift handles up for sale. Now, I realize that Shelby specific stuff will be more expensive than Cougar stuff, but does 300 bucks for a wooden shift handle seem like a lot of money for what it is??
I guess there is also a mustang handle also available, but I’ve never seen of other than in the ad.
What do you think?
Yup, those are the two, that I am referring to.
I think I paid around a hundred for my Cougar handle, and I would be interested in the Shelby one, for around maybe 150.
Not, 300 dollars!
I’ve been on both sides of that equation. There really is no right answer. I’ve put things up for sale that I knew I couldn’t replace so I priced them at what I thought was the moon. People bought them anyway. I’ve also seen things for sale that I really wanted priced at what I thought was ridiculous money. Yes people bought them anyway. There’s no price guide for scarce desirable car parts. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.
On one hand $300 is a lot for a shifter handle that I really do not have a need or use for other than to sit on a shelf and look at it. On the other hand $300 is not a lot of money if it is the last piece I need to finish a high end restoration of a real Shelby. So it really comes down to how badly to you want to own one?

You can’t buy one for $4.95 or $5.95 as per the ad??? Dang…bait and switch, eh?
Keep in mind when it comes to the Shelby knob they were reproduced. A reproduction doesn’t have nearly the value. Tony Branda used to sell them.
Make SURE it’s a real one if you’re going to drop some change on one.

I did see another Shelby handle listed, they want 580.00 for that one, so I’m guessing that one is a more legit model…Anyone ever see the mustang piece in person??
Yes. They’re the same other than the small insert. However, I have a manual, so I have never examined one nor do I know how to determine if they are the original. There was some discussion in the SAAC forum about them. Some moron on Ebay was trying to get 3500.00 for one claimed to be NOS.
The part number on the box wasn’t correct and it was also a reproduction.
Finding xr7g parts cars is getting rather difficult for us. This last one was from a decade ago…
You never know when you might find a G that needs some G specific parts, so I have tried to buy spares, when the prices are low enough, just in case. I have been collecting NOS and good used parts for years and some of them have come in very handy when fixing up one of these cars that has limited production parts. I do have a couple of extra G auto shifters handles, just in case. I think that the G handles were repoped at some point. Are they all gone now?
Gone for years now…
That’s too bad, they were pretty good reproductions. There was a silver version of the cat that went into Eliminators.
That’s a lot of dough for that. I got a NOS one of those for like $25.00 a couple of years ago.
So here is another Cougar knob, and now this one I haven’t seen before. Seems kind of steep based on the condition. I have the chrome, wood and leather examples, all with a smooth finish-

Those are auto parts store off brand knobs. They show up on ebay as NORS once in awhile, whenever we get a used one it goes in our free pile.
Don, next time you get a free one, let me know!
Here is another chrome knob up for auction- These can be bought for a decent price, if you pay attention…
