Doing a from scratch build on an inherited 67 Cougar. Wired in the harness, and was able to start the car with the key. Great start point. Now I’ve made my way to the lighting aspect of the car, and I’m having some odd issues. Swapping out the harness for another one I have fixed some key issues, but I still have no signals, no headlights, and no hazards. Just to clarify, I have brake lights, and driving lights. That is all.
I am missing at least one relay, under the drivers side of the dash. I am missing the K-7 (https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/c7wb-13a366-a.html?sessionthemeid=26) I also have another plug with 4 wires that I don’t know what it’s for. Two black wires (one hot), a red, and a white (red or white is hot, can’t remember)
The front driving lights (in lower valance) only work when one click out on the light switch. When light switch is pulled all the way out (assuming this is the brights?) the front valance lights shut off.
The sequential unit runs and outputs voltage when the hazards are on, but the lights do not flash.
When the hazards are on, and I move the signal switch in either direction, the relay on the sequential unit clicks.
After swapping out two different harnesses (engine bay and under dash) and tracking down relays in boxes of crap I have accrued, I am at my wits end. I have no manuals to go off of, wiring diagrams are near impossible to find, or hard to read. I don’t know what needs to be plugged into what anymore, and am having alot of trouble figuring out what needs to go where. Is there a good manual to purchase that would have all of this info? I’ve been doing pretty good so far, but winter is approaching and this car needs to move (legally). Just trying to speed up my process, I find the wiring bits slow me down the most!
You don’t mention what model 67 you are working on. The wiring harness’s are both model specific and year specific- a standard is different from XR7 and from 67 to 68. Hopefully you had a harness from same model and year to swap. WCCC has some wiring on their site for free download and NPD did offer plastic covered diagrams for 67 standard and XR7 as well as 68 standard. Not an easy task swapping harness’s in these cars- a lot of wiring in a Cougar especially if you compare to a Mustang.
It’s a 67 base model cougar that came with a 289. My two harnesses are slightly different. How do I tell if my harness is from an xr7 or base model? I have a plethora of parts and little to no knowledge on what is xr7 or not.
From what I can see, I think I have a 68 xr7 harness currently in the car. I have some photos here, maybe someone can tell me if I’m right or wrong here. Hopefully these links work:
And one last one for now, what the hell is this for? I have to add I have a duraspark II ignition module in the car, so I don’t know if this can is factory for the engine. Engine is a 69’ 460. The white connector plug for the coil is from a mid 70’s Mercury I found at the junkyard, so I don’t know if that taped off plug needs to connect to anything I am running. https://app.photobucket.com/u/huwhackt/p/f3799810-c8a7-4f4e-b951-43caf3fab0bf
The instrument cluster in your picture is for a 1967 standard Cougar, not an XR-7. Take a picture of the alternator connectors. That would be definitive.
I had a hunch that this car was originally a manual, just based off of the wiring harness that I believe was originally in the car, (removed and replaced with the harness shown in the pictures posted previously). Will using a cluster from a manual cause me issues with the harness I am currently running?
Here are the alternator harness wires:
Back of alternator:
So it is hooked up to work properly with a '67 standard dash using an idiot light for the Alternator. The whole wiring harness is documented in excruciating detail in the factory shop manual.
Footwasher plug: push the foot-pedal for windshield washers, only on 67/68 Mustangs and Cougars.
I’m sorry if you thought I was plugging for a young gal dressed in a French Maid outfit washing your feet…
The phrasing threw me off is all. I think I’ve even looked at that foot pedal a dozen times, so that’s installed along with my dimmer switch. Installed the reverse lights, side marker lights, another relay over on the passenger side, and now the relay in the trunk cycles like its signaling, then the cycling slows down as if power is dropping. Still no hazard lights or signal lights.
I’ve got a post loaded with confusion and questions here, beware.
I’ve learned a bit since I last posted here and made good progress on the car. Had some seized brake calipers to repair and did some mounting of major components in order to drive the car. Test drives are fun to say the least, and a little quieter with the exhaust on.
My front marker lights turn on when the key is turned to ACC. Unsure if this is normal or not.
4 way flashers activate the sequential motor, and power comes in/out of the rotary switch accordingly. Although I don’t think the sequential unit is supposed to run when the 4 ways are engaged. Am I correct here?
I am currently running a K7 dash flash relay from a 1967. With this relay the sequential unit runs when the emergency flashers switch is on. When this relay is grounded the dash lights for the signals both come on solid, no flashing. The 1968 K7 that I have doesn’t seem to do anything. No dash lights, no sequential unit running. Although with the emergency flasher switch ON, when I activate the signal lever left or right the emergency relay in the trunk clicks once. I have opened up the '68 K7 relay and it looked good inside. I also re-soldered the ground strap.
*Edit
I’ve got voltage at 2/3 wires at my k7 flasher plug. I jumped 12v to the one missing voltage and now after that my sequential unit runs but no exterior lights flash when I signal left/right, the indicator light on the dash comes on but no flashing. I’m getting somewhere. Just not fast.
I am having issues with my turn signals in which only two of the three lights are working. Not sure what the issue can be and this is above my paygrade. I converted them to LED (not from WCC as they were out of stock when I was looking for them) and installed the new turn signal relay.
Any ideas? Or better yet, any recommendations for a shop that is familiar with Cougars in the Southern California/Orange County area? This seems to be a little above my paygrade to figure out and I can use some help.
