Some years ago, probably 10 to 20 maybe even 30, I went along with a friend to look at a car he was considering purchasing. I do not recall the details but as I recall the car was a 1967 or 1968 Mustang Coupe. It was suppose to be a Mexican Shelby. I believe it was a small block car. I seem to recall that it had the coiled snake emblem on the roof sail panel and I believe that it has a Shelby VIN tag as well. Of course I could be all wrong on this, my memory can be as faulty as anyones. I do not recall if I took any photos of the car or not, maybe. If I ever get time I could go through my large stack of photo envelopes, you know, the ones you received when you actually had to have film developed. My friend did not buy the car, that would have made my search too easy. Anyone else hear of Mexican Shelbys?
Yes, the Shelby De Mexico’s are well known in the Shelby community. A car dealer friend of Shelbys’ south of the border, Eduardo Velazquez, made the licensing arrangements with Carroll.
For some reason the '69s are way more prevalent, but there were earlier versions too that really looked sharp - tho they tended to hang every trinket that said “Shelby” on them.
Randy, if you did take any photos of it the Shelby guys would kill to see them.
Here is a color photo of, if I’m getting this correct, was at first thought to be a clone but then a friend of the owner chimed in on the thread and it turned out to be legit.
Thanks guys. It’s good to know that the old memory is still working and has not yet fallen to that old age disease. I do not know if I did take any photos or not. Some day I will take time to go through all those old photos.
To add a bit of a Cougar connection, Bullups Auto Body, the shop that is restoring the Green Hornet Shelby and now Little Red, is about 15 minutes from me. While their specialty is Boss and Shelby Mustangs, Jason Billups, who runs the place, is also a Cougar fan. They’ve been involved in the restoration of several, including, just within the last year or so, a '68 428CJ (non-GT-E) standard, a '70 428CJ XR-7 convertible, and my '70 Eliminator. The Green Hornet came in while my car was being worked on, so I was already following that restoration pretty closely. It’ll be exciting to watch what they can do with Little Red.
Little Red was featured at Woodard this weekend in the Shelby exhibit. Mr. Marti was standing by it.
Saw a nice 70 Eliminator that was pale yellow, looked like original paint.
