1972 Mercury Cougar
Cigarette lighter works and heats up. When I plug in an adapter to charge my phone, it doesn’t work. I’ve tried 2 different adapters and neither work but both work fine in a different vehicle. What should I buy? Suggestions?

I would think it’s a power issue. The cigarette lighter in our classic Cougars were designed to light cigarettes. I’m pretty sure the phone charger adapters are designed accessory outlets not cigarette ports. Just my thoughts.

I had the same issue in my '69 Corvette, where I wanted to run a dash camera. We solved it by purchasing a 12V power port at Autozone and installing it under the dash. You could do the same and then run a USB extender cable into the glove compartment.
Just a thought, back when I had a portable air pump (HF or HD brand) I sometimes had to spin the plug in the cigg lighter for it to make contact to provide power.
I have a cell phone holder designed for a lighter socket with two USB ports that charge the phone without any issue on either my 68 or my 2013 Infiniti.
Thanks everyone…I’ll see what I can get my hubby to wire up for me.
