Loose door mirror glass in my ‘68

Hi guys,
I have a manual adjust door mirror in my 1968. The mirror falls out of adjustment when I close the door or hit a bump. Can I remove the glass and tighten the pivot without removing the mirror from the door? I can’t pull the mirror without pulling my door panel because one of my rivnuts spins if I don’t hold it from inside the door. What happens if I remove the screw on the back of the mirror head (as in this WCCC photo)?

Thanks guys:)
John

Removing the screw shown in your photo will separate the mirror head from the base. If you do not have a remote control mirror you will then be holding the head in your hand and may be able to find a way to repair it. If you do have a remote control mirror then the control cables will only allow you to separate the head a short distance from the base. I do not know how to tell you to repair your actual problem once you get the two sections apart. Sorry.

If you take the two screws out that hold the mirror to the door then you will be able to see there is a small bolt inside the mirror base where the cables run through. It takes a 5/16" socket to tighten that bolt. When you tighten the bolt your problem will be solved.

Thanks .

My mirror is manual adjust so no cables. If I remove the mirror head, I should see that same 5/16 bolt?

I pulled the mirror head and everything looks okay. Very gritty dirt inside so I cleaned it up. Reinstalled and it seems to hold position a bit better. Time will tell

Following.

Looks like cleaning out the dirt from the pivot ball area and retightening everything has worked for me.
