Lumilor Paint Technology

I just read a story in today’s paper about a Northeast Ohio Company, Darkside Scientific, that is developing a paint technology that illuminates. This is not merely a glow in the dark idea that will fade after an hour or so. But an actual paint that lights up until you shut it off.

The custom car and bike world will be putting this into action shortly if not already.

I found it very interesting.

That’d be kinda neat for “wow” factor…I’m envisioning “Tron” type accenting…

That TRON car that West Coast Customs made suddenly doesn’t seem valid anymore.

Looks quite cool.

Wonder how long it’ll take before the ricers get their hands on it and make it seriously uncool ?

That is cool. I can see this paint process becoming a wow for the “fast and furious” types. No more neon tubes and LED’s for them to light their rides. Now on the other hand a street rod with flames done with this Lumilor Paint would make an impression at any night time Cruise In.

Hmmmmm… do they make a clearcoat that’s compatible with other mfg’s basecoats? Got this idea for illuminating the whole car with a press on a key fob. Even the most glaringliy blind idiot should be able to avoid it on the street; especially when you flip the switch and BAM! “WOAH, there’s a car in front of me!”

Hey, that’s it - this paint is a “life-safety” item! It should be good for at least a decent deduction off your insurance premiums, just like a “Good Driver” or “Driver’s Education” discount; right?

Dawg I like your “life safety” idea. No way an insurance company will give a discount for it, they are all cash grabbers. It would be a cool idea to light up our fire trucks and rescue trucks. Drivers can’t seem to see our strobe lights at night (for whatever reason) with this paint it would be like you said but, BAM! "WOAH, there’s a fire truck in front of me!

I haven’t read / watched it all yet. But I’m wondering if you could layer it and then cycle through the different layers for a sort of “animation” effect.
Then you could make the hot rod flames look like they are actually flickering / burning. Or make lightning look like it is crackling down the side of yo ride!

I could see this eventually taking the place of large installed turn signal assemblies and side marker lights. Instead they would paint up a panel with a turn signal on it and plug it in.

Huh… I wonder if that is what makes UFO’s glow. No lightbulbs, just a luminescent panel.

I want it on the ceiling in my house too. Imagine a rheostat that lets you dial up different colors for your walls.

Ok, getting way sidetracked here… :bonghitter:

You must be kidding; or did you really believe the guy who told you he “…didn’t see your fire engine…” ? I’m a half-century old and have been driving for longer than the 34 years I’ve been legal to drive; AND I’ve been “four-eyed” since I was SEVEN. Last time I went to the optometrist, he was saying that TRIFOCALS were probably in my future. But I STILL cannot wrap my mind around HOW THE (expletive deleted, but it rhymes with the last name of a Disney character whose first name is Donald) could somebody NOT see or hear a FIRE ENGINE while DRIVING??? :bloated:

That guy’s gotta be hitting some seriously GOOD sh*t! :bonghitter:

that just cost you another keyboard, Dawg!

Dawg it happens quite often. I’m not sure what the reason is but people just don’t seem to see us. Lights, sirens, air horns help but there always seems to be one that is blind to the fact we are there. I just became certified to teach rescue apparatus placement on emergency scenes. This class is to train driver / operators how to place trucks so they can be used as barriers to protect emergency personnel. The first class I teach will be this week for fire and EMS crews.

Why do they need to write AMBULANCE backwards ?

I gather it’s so you can see it in your mirrors and know what it is.

FFS, I know what a f****in ambulance looks like, the flashing lights and sirens are a big giveaway…

Trying to raise $250,000? Seems like not enough to bring this to market. I wonder if they are looking for private equity partners…
