mass backed carpet or not?

So did our cars come with mass backed carpet or not? I have watched wccc video of mass backed carpet install in Lin’s car from 2009 but got the impression that our cars didn’t come with mass backing. So what is the consensus? Thanks all.

The carpet was normal type but the Cougar’s had heavy mats on the floor. Particularly heavy mats in the foot wells. I replaced my carpet with the non mass backed option. However I used a sound deading coating and heat shield padding over the tunnel.

I did kind of the same as John. Regular carpet and a material like Dynamat with foil backing on floors, doors, roof, metal panel behind backseat, firewall and tunnel. Works very well at keeping the heat out. I also put extra sound deadening material on the floorboards and under the back seat. When the windows are up it feels solid and pretty quiet even with my Magnaflo exhaust.

I used mass backed and dynamat type sound deadening on the floor. I wanted it to be as quiet as possible inside. Worked well.

Originally the carpet did not need the extra layer of rubber applied to the back of the carpet since the pile was thick and heavy and worked well by the standards of the time with the thick jute underlayment to handle sound and if needed heat

Today would not use anything but mass back if purchasing the typical molded carpet sold through most parts outlets. Since the 90’s the reproduction carpet has gotten cheaper (how it is made not the price) with the carpet pile further and further apart to the point where you can see through it. The mass back application can help hide that fact though does not make the product better as far as reproducing the original look.

Just an opinion and experience with the product

So basically the mass backed carpet has a heavy tar like butyl component sprayed on the back of the carpet then the 5/8 inch insulation is attached. So any guesses as to how much the original carpet with the original tar paper sound deadener weigh? I think I will do the mass backed with the Dynamat Superlite to try and keep the weight down similar to original weight.

If you have ever removed the original sound deadener, you know how heavy it was/is. Even with the mass carpet & the “roofing material” deadener, my guess the later is still lighter by a bit. Believe Don stated it weighed like 30Lbs???

WCCC has a couple videos about the mass backed carpet. I recall them stating it was a lot heavier then other options. Be sure to check those out for some tips etc…

I used the repro tar/cloth fiber sound deadener and added a layer of self-adhesive Dynamat over the tar layer to hold it all together better - worked great. Then I installed the older style nylon replacement carpet that was available in 2013. But I never was happy with how poorly the carpet fit over the transmission tunnel, or the visible cornrows as discussed in the WCCC carpet video. Also didn’t like the non-original toe pad to the right if the gas pedal. And it is has already gotten frizzy enough on the drivers side to replace again. I want the thicker yarn 80/20 “Raylon” carpet with backing that was discussed in the WCCC video. It looks closest to original and sounds like this is what WCCC sells now, but not sure about other sources?

Decided to go the other way. Dynamat has a precut kit in Dynamat Xtreme for 1970 mustang. Summit racing has it. Will also use the 1/4" Dynaliner in footwell to firewall and use the regular/non mass backed carpet. Should lay better under door sills. I remember using the mass backed in the past and having to force the door sills over the thicker carpet.

That was my approach too - insulate underneath, and then use the non mass-backed carpet.
