Media Blasting

I’m looking for a recommendation for a Media Blasting company, in California, Arizona, Nevada or Utah. I’m looking to remove surface rust on my Cougar after sitting in the Nevada desert for some 22 years.

You might want to consider “acid dipping” your parts? It would be a lot more effective for rust removal with no chance of warping your panels.

I’ll do that. Do you have a recommendation. Or anybody else out there. Thank you.

You might consider “dry ice blasting”. I was able to locate a mobile vendor of this service up here near Seattle. It is often used inside buildings for paint removal and particularly for mold up in attics where you can’t have media residue and moisture.

I put the car on a rotisserie, with the drivetrain and the interior removed. Front fenders off. The dry ice leaves no moisture and no residue, the only thing that is removed is the material you want removed, like rust, dirt, etc. This process in my opinion, while not good enough for a concourse restoration, is much better, safer, with much less clean up required that media blasting.

Thank you for the input. I’ll look in to both methods.

Soda blasting wont generate heat and warp panels and leaves a surface that wont flash rust for months.

Soda blasting will not remove any rust,

My personal experience with soda blasting two desert cars was very positive but with any tool the right one must be carefully chosen.

Every type of blasting or stripping has its up and down side. Only did a dip once and would not do that again. Though our local cars rarely have any real rust issues hidden deep within the uni-body. Allot of it has to do with the operator and their experience rather than method IMHO. Now the aftermath - clean-up, residue media and those issues have to be consider. See allot of cars where the paint finish in the trunk area especially can look like sand paper as the painter pushed out the product, on to the waiting wet paint coat, from the hidden corners and pockets

Often companies attend swap meets to show off their services and/or you can check with some restoration shops in your area any car make - often consider European makes, and see who they are using. Should not have to travel far to find what will work for you. You don’t want to use the local guy that stripes truck and commercial trailer frames in the side yard or anywhere

Contact Karl at A Strip Center, in Vegas, 702-791-0352. The best blaster around. I owned the business, sold it to Karl in 2010, website: www.astripcenter.com

Plastic media used on panels that could warp, doesn’t generate heat, glass bead media on the frame. Blow it out, hit the car with a DA with 80 grit, then spray it with Dupont Epoxy primer, you could drop the body in Lake Meade for 20 years, and that epoxy primer will still be protecting the metal.

And, that prep will provide your painter, with a perfect canvas for a concours worthy paint job.

Has anyone used Dustless blasting.
They advertise on My Classic Car.

I have not used it, it came out after I got out of the business, BUT, from what I’ve seen and heard, if I was still in the business, I’d have one of their rigs for sure

Thank you for your input and help. Sorry for not getting back sooner. Been gone.

I have one and it is amazing, mine uses water and media (usually baking soda). It won’t warp metal or etch glass, there are so many upsides. It is also a much more efficient process. Let me know if you have any other questions about it.

I thought the newest/ best method was crushed nut shells??

Is yours for personal use or do you have a business.

We have just been using it for our personal projects, we had considered that, but have too many other ventures. Always have to be aware of spreading yourself out too thin, right. I actually spoke with my father, I think we are going to try and sell ours, we have all our frame-offs blasted down and we never use it anymore. It does 15,000 psi.

How much does a unit like that go for.

Maybe think about renting the equipment out, get some liability papers together for personal injury and property coverage in case of renter damage to the equipment. Get the equipment paid off and make some money on the side. I’d love to rent a dustless blaster and do the work myself if it meant a fraction of the cost it usually takes for someone else to come do the work for top dollar.

Best media blasting business around is Pro-Strip in Mesa, AZ. They have been doing this process on classic cars for 20+ years. Removes paint, bondo, rust, everything, with no damage! I have had them blast many many parts, entire cars (my 1970 convertible), brackets, suspension parts, engine parts, etc. They do all the top quality restoration cars here in Arizona, Hemi Cars, Million dollar exotics, Shelby, etc. Never had any damage to a single part. They also can do epoxy primer coating, so you can get the car or parts back looking almost new again!
