mercury switch trunk light repair

I have a correct numbered trunk light for my 67 that is in really nice shape and functions as it should. The only down side is the wire broke off the center post inside the light. Does anyone know if that center post should/can come out so a new wire can be attached? The post is spring loaded, and the black plastic shroud around it is also. Just don’t want to trash an otherwise perfectly good switch, or end up with mercury on myself.
Thanks!
David

No, the center post should not come out (I presume you’re talking about the wire tit that makes contact with the mercury body). You might be able to cobble a similar contact from other light bulb sockets. If there is any wire left on the tit, you might be able to solder the wire back on (use heat shrink when done).
