Most accurate Speedo cable 69 428 with C6

Going to replace mine as it has broken. I have read that the part number is: C9ZF17260-C. I have also read that it is supposed to be 63.5". NPD, WCCC and Mansfield all carry one, but they vary in price and probably length. Wondering if anyone has any experience with which is the best and most accurate and best fitting repro.

WCCC shows the correct one to be a -B. I think you can get one at most of the local auto part stores for about $20.

Are you looking for just the cable, or the cable and housing?

I tried looking for the C9ZZ-17260-B at Mansfield ( 1969 428 with C-6 A/T ) and nothing was there with that configuration. At WCCC the -B version was showing a length of 76", and the item #13001 for the C-6 ( + reducer ) had no length given. At NPD the 17260-7A was showing a length of 66.5" ( and it was for the 428 w/o rear gears of 3.91 or 4.30 but it didn’t specifiy the A/T ) The NPD 17260-12B cable seems to be the correct ‘replacement’ for the C9ZZ-17260-B:

but no length is shown or given.
Best of luck on this one - seems to be some conflicting ( or missing ) information out there.

the whole thing. Cable and housing.

I looked at this as well, and agree it is likely right, but no length. I can call NPD to check the length. Also agree the info is quit conflicting. Have a call into Mansfield as well. The advantage to going to a local store is that at least I can measure it.

These 3 pages from the MPC should answer all of your questions. I shouldn’t have to explain it except to say that the Cougar is model ‘F’

The one from WCCC is a bit long but works. 3.91 or4.30 gears needs a gear reducer - that’s not the right one.

Ty for copying these. Seems that the C9ZZ-17260-B at 63.5" is the right one.

Your welcome

A bit of detective work reveals the following: The 69 C6 speedo cable on NPD is made by a company called Clark Brothers, item # 44200. I called NPD and it is indeed 63.5”-perfect length. It has no firewall grommet. I know bc not only does the picture fail to show it but also I had NPD pull one off the shelf- no rubber firewall grommet. Also no O ring and no mounting clip or cable to trans clip. I have also emailed Clark Brothers to get more info. The NPD cable item # is 17260-12B, $78.51. The local parts store offering is a Pioneer cable CA3012, it is $10.99-16.99, the wrong length at 80”, and gets bad reviews at one place and good at another. Mansfield Mustang doesn’t list a C6 Speedo cable. I called and left a message 3 days ago. Nothing yet. WCCC has what appears to be the same Pioneer 80” cable, but the picture shows it with the O-ring. WCCC also carries the repro firewall grommet. Called Holly about the Scott Drake part- hold wait time: 30+ Minutes- screw that.

Bottom line: 69 C6 speedo cable- NPD seems the most correct but not cheap. But 80” cheap repro is more likely to get burned up on hot exhaust. And pulling the dash pad to do this job is most of the work. Maybe you get what you pay for here. Love to hear any other feedback.

You need the speedometer clip that attaches the cable housing to the floor pan. AMK sells those. Otherwise it gets burned by the exhaust pipe.

I recently put a new cable in my 1969 FMX from WCCC. I ended up tearing the firewall grommet off and using a sliced body plug. The grommet that came with the cable was to soft to stay in the firewall opening. The body plug is much stiffer and pops into the opening and stays put. I sealed it off with some strip caulk.

New problem. Just pulled the speedo cable out of a 4 speed top loader and can’t get the fitting out. Isn’t it just a press fit with a rubber seal?

Yes it has a rubber O - ring which is likely melted in place.

New at this. Not sure my reply sent.
Thx Royce. So using pressure to just pry it off is ok.
Wanted a look at the gear because at 60 mph on my speedometer the car is doing 68 mph. WCCC says they only have the 16 tooth speedo gear when I need a 15 tooth gear to be more accurate. Can’t find one. When my original 3 speed transmission died at 250K miles I put in a 4 speed top loader from a ‘69 Cougar. Guessing they didn’t change out the speedo gear.

Check NPD- they seem to have many different speedo gears to chose from.

Thanks for that.

16 teeth is the least number made - and the 3 speed manual transmission and automatic transmissions require the gear teeth be cut the opposite of the 4 speed manual because the speedometer cable enters the other side of the transmission on the 4 speed.

More teeth on the speedometer driven gear = slower speed indicated by the speedometer. I think you need more teeth, not less.
