I bought a 67 last year and have the engine out and torn down. Previous owner put an edelbrock performer ,intake, and carb kit on it. It ran very hot in stop and go traffic. I want a daily driver. Can the cam cause it to run hot? I was gonna put in a stock cam. I put in a new radiator and thermostat to no avail. He also took out the heater core which i want to replace. the block says 302 and the heads 289. is that an issue. The engine was rebuilt 3 years ago and it ran great but hot and broke off a rocker arm stud at rapid acceleration i think due to the cam. Any suggestions? Thanks,Ohio Pic
The first thing to check since it is torn down, is the amount it was bored out previously. A 289 bored ot to .050 over will sometimes have so many hot spots that they run hot no matter what you do.
Thanks xr7
For me, my car is bone stock right now and when I first bought it, it overheated whenever it sat still.
I pulled the currently unused and completely clogged and rotted A/C condenser out from in front of the radiator and that solved the problem.
Only thing is, then the car wouldn’t get up to operating temperature and I had to reinstall a new thermostat that the previous owner had taken out to try to fix the overheating problem.
I’d look other places as well as the block to make sure it isn’t something that doesn’t require a additional engine tear down later when still trying to trouble shoot.
I’m still learning windsor style engines as I go, but possibly a water pump of the wrong rotation was installed at the time of the rebuild?
Thanks Fordblue. I’m going to put a new waterpump on when i rebuild
During the intake and carb change you can end up with a vacuum leak that can cause lean condition and major heat issues as well.
