Mustangs Unlimited console lid fitment question

So, after far, far too long, I am trying to get my interior back together, for this Saturdays event in Boulder. I have had 5 different addresses since it all came apart, before sheet metal, body and paint. The car, and every other thing I own, has also been relocated, at least once, in this same time frame. Take note kids, DON’T take it apart, thinking it will only be a week or so!!
My question is about the lid fitment for the factory center console. I had to modify one hole location, to get it to screw together, but it is off by quite a bit. It doesn’t cover the opening, and the screws are contacting each other when I try to close it. But it seems like that is the only way it can go together. The hinge has to be on the outside- As I recall, it seems the lid had a slot cut along the outside edge, and was able to sit flush across the top. WTH obvious thing am I just not seeing?

I think you have an incorrect hinge. On mine the half that attaches to the lid is wider than the half that attaches to the base. I’ll add pictures as soon as the transfer from my phone to my computer.

Note, my lid and hinge are Ford parts. I have found in the past that reproduction lids are a bit short.

The lid wants to fit- it covers the insert fine, it’s just binding . I didn’t think about maybe trying to slot the upper hinge. That may be enough to get it to close.

Also notice that the factory hinge has the screw holes offset from the holes on the opposite leaf of the hinge. So the screw heads don’t interfere with each other. On that aftermarket hinge, you may need countersunk screws.

Been there, done that on quickly taking stuff apart for a day job, and putting it back together 5 yrs later. Same problems you are having….lol!

Dude! It’s miserable…. I spent over an hour looking for a screw for the passenger side window crank. Thank goodness for a good parts bucket, or three….

Damn - that’s WAY worse than my pile. Good luck!

I thought I had a solution for my lid, with gorilla tape- but no dice. I’ll just have to live with it for the day. I got the majority of the interior done, reconnected the speedo cable, installed the back seats, etc…It’s about a hundred miles round trip, lets hope that the car continues to run as well as it has!
