Hello Brian, just did the measurement of the hood scoop on the 1969 which maybe different from your 1968. From the back of the scoop to the back of the hood is 2 3/4" at the middle point, from each side the distance is 3". Hope that helps.

You can see a video on adjusting the steering box on WCCC.

If that does not fix the problem a new box isn’t too hard to install. I got one from WCCC and installed it myself on my '67 (390, 4spd, 4bbl that my Dad bought new, I bought it from my Mother after Dad died.)

Thank you Richard great story about your car and the family ties. I did previously watch the WCCC video and tried the various adjustments and possible problems. I think I am down to needing a new box.
