Need some help interpreting numbers stamped on a 302 motor. I have been cleaning rust and dirt off the motor and I keep finding “strange” numbers stamped on the block. Of course the casting number C9OE-6015C and date code 9H26 (26 August 1969) are on the lower right side of block and on the top rear of the block there is a partial VIN.
Now the strange numbers – on the front left of the block near the distributor is stamped “9J13Y” and on the opposite side “99271C” is stamped on the block. What do they mean? Are they important?
Les, 9J13Y could be the date code when the engine was assembled for 9-1969, J-Month of September & 13-13th day. Y could be a inspectors code. I don’t know what the 99271C is. Regarding the partial VIN,0 is for 1970, A-Atlanta assembly plant where the car was built & since the last 6 numbers starts with a 1,the engine came out of a Ford. John
John, Thanks for the information. The engine block was not original to the 1968 Cougar, but it appears from the date codes that intake and exhaust manifolds probably are original (I haven’t had a look at the heads yet).
