Need help with Transmission Tag decode

Hello all! I just acquired my first Cougar, a 1967 A code resto-mod someone else started 20 years ago, which had passed into some not so caring hands in the meantime. I plan to start a thread for a proper intro, but was wanting help decoding the ‘Date incorrect’ Transmission tag. I got as far as the year(1968) and that it is for a Cougar (W), but nothing on the application/engine configuration that it came out of:

What I believe to be a C4 Auto,
The Tag number is:

PEE N
C8WP B M12

Mustangtek lists a PEE M(xx) to PEE R, with no ‘N’, but the PEE’s in this range seem to be mostly from 302’s?

Thanks for the Forum and any help you may lend!

Oh, and AFTER I bought it, I found out I live 30 min from Cougar mecca, WCCC :ylsuper: …met Don today and fought not to spend all my loose change.

Devildog you are correct, it is a C4 transmission. Looking in my Mustang & Cougar Tagbook, it doesn’t list PEE-N, but looking in my '68 Shop manual it does and says it’s for a Cougar with a 302-2V. Question, is the transmission installed in the car or not? John

Thank you very much for checking! It is in the vehicle, but given the 6 quarts of tranny fluid in the trunk and the missing lower shroud (naked flywheel :astonished: ), it is destined for a replacement.

and whats the deal with this conversion, basically makes it a 302?

The story from the young man I purchased it from was a previous owner had fitted the 289 with 351 heads and a new cam. He had no spec’s, and a pile of reciepts from 1991ish with generic listings like “camshaft” and “rebuilt heads”, and had been built as low compression for nitrous at some point (not my intent)
Some one put some decent work in at one point. New front end bushings, heavy zerk fittings. Looks like factory front disk.

It runs with some roughness ATM, and I will be replacing the entire drive-train after I get the body squared away. Step by step…that top is already stripped and prepped

Whats up with that paint?(Originally it was Bronze Metallic)

You’re welcome devildog. When you do pull the transmission, look on the the top of the main casing towards the back of it on the left side and see if there’s a VIN stamped on it (you may have to clean it a little to see if it’s there) and post the info. The VIN would start with the last digit of the year, then a letter for the assembly plant, then up to 6 numbers starting with either a 1 or a 5. Here’s an example of a partial VIN stamped on the transmission: 8F1XXXXX or 8F5XXXXX. John
