Need Setup Advice From Experienced Drag Racers

Looking back it could have been other things. It could be the coil voltage between the HEI and the flamethrower that came with the Pertronix was different enough to call for different heat on the plugs. (Although I think I checked this too) I am just going to file it under “Couldn’t fix it with a hammer, therefore it was an electrical problem” and move on. I wouldn’t be afraid to run one again. I just have a lot of money tied up in this motor so far and my past experience has made me a little gun shy.

I have dished top with AFR 205 heads with 58cc chamber running 10.5 compression. Cam lift is .688’ exh & .715 Int


How much clearance do you have now? I am running flat tops but my lift is only around 500 on both.

I ended up with .124” I think the minimum you want is .080” to .100” I had enough material to work with on top of the piston to get to that number without any concerns. I cc the piston before & after and then adjusted it with the head gasket thickness.

Dont know if this will be read…but CAMSHAFT Duration/ cylinder head flow/ compression ratio/ final drive rations…these must be in a well sorted combo or everything else you try will have limited results…notice I did not say “GEAR RATIO” very important to consider the tire diameter along with the rear gear ratio…to work with CAMSHAFT DURATION…not lift …when you get your combo sorted…make changes to achieve consistency NOT ET …and most importantly…HAVE FUN

I thought I would give an update on this car. I have gotten a lot of work done on it. The major thing was to get rid of the questionable 4 link and put the rear leafs with a ladder bar in it. I still have to put a shock mount in but the main part of it is done. The front end has been completely rebuilt with new parts. I replaced all the old bolts with good grade 8 hardware with lock nuts everywhere I could (overkill I know). The hood was mangled pretty bad so I pounded it out and put a cowl induction scoop on it. As soon as the motor is in and I can measure it out perfectly I will cut the hole underneath to make it functional. I also filled the cowl vents, removed the heater box and plated it, filled in the firewall between the trunk and cabin, installed front cross member reinforcements, and about a hundred other little things. The biggest thing that got done was I sanded the car down to bare metal, sealed it, and shot it satin black. What a huge difference that made. Motor and trans is going in this week.

The car is very dusty in these pics. It sits adjacent to my wood shop so it gets covered in saw dust.

It looks like there is a large gap between the alumninum filler panels and the wheel tubs because of the shadows in this pic. But they are actually tight to one another.
