Need suggestions on how to make a fake Ram Air

I know there have been posts but I could not find them. I have a customer I am trying to help that has a 1969 351w and wants to do a budget Ram Air. Anyone have some pictures or links?

Use a stock 4 Bbl air cleaner with a Mr Gasket 1480 chrome lid and some foam rubber or purchase a repo hood to Air Cleaner seal.

To add to what Don said, ANY air cleaner base, chrome lid of your choice, Aussie Ford snorkel block off (which I’d sell since I have subsequently welded up the opening for a cleaner look) and Frost King garage door weatherstrip (available at HD or Lowes). Here is my setup:

Anytime I hear “Ram-Air” the Thunderbolt style is what I automatically picture.

I’ve seen it done on the cheap using a mid-80s Corvette air cleaner housing because it has a dual snorkels, and flexible clothes dryer hose. Run it down between the bumper and valance on a Cougar or go the “screen in the headlight” route.

Better and “cheaper” yet. Don, scrounge some junkyard :poke: and make your own dual snorkel.

Bob thats a clean looking setup you have put together.

Thanks Steven!

Mark,

Both of your examples are “Cold Air Intake” in my book. “Ram Air” implies through the hood to me. I guess “Thunderbolt Style” had their own interpretation…

Having said that, I think both are certainly good ideas for helping an engine to “breathe right”.

Here are a few pics of a '69 Eliminator w/ 351, with ram air added. Pics aren’t great, but hopefully they will help you out some.

Nice! Keep them coming… The guy I am speaking of has a scoop in place and someone has cut the hole in the hood is why he wants ram air as opposed to dual snorkels.

Don here is a thread link showing some different ideas. Air Induction

Nice with the chrome lid (and 351C).

I had a similar setup as well with my 351W back in the day. Sealed up nice to the bottom side of the hood but a rare and expensive piece to create the ram air. Motor is running at idle with vacuum hence the little flapper door is shut closed in my picture.

this is by far the easiest, and what I did on my car.
It’s a dollars down way to get a fresh/cool air intake on the car through a hood scoop.

It’s not even a big deal to block the snorkel like Bob because the hood scoops for these cars tend to be crapulent and not so aerodynamically efficient at moving air into the engine. Mostly it’s just a cold air setup that allow you a direct vent to outside air.
the only thing I did was install a water drain in the bottom of the breather with a pcv fitting and pcv hose.

I drove my for hours in the rain at a fast (75mph) clip and never did get any water into the carb.

I’d tell the guy to use a K&N stub stack on the carb and the stock breather base minus the snorkel. Ram-air like Bob’s is the way to go unless he wants to spring for a factory flappydoodle. :licka:

Don, is he wanting a factory looking setup? And how cheap is he talking? There are a few low cost options available that I’ve done but look and act factory. Here’s one place that makes fiberglass versions as one option.

Spotted one on eBay the other day. Not sure what the budget is…

Hey shaman, do you have a part # on the “factory flappydoodle”? hahahaha, thanks for the chuckle of the day!

Yeah, right here!
