New brake booster issue on my ‘68 Cougar

After installing your new repro Midland booster & new master cylinder I’m experiencing a slowly returning brake pedal after braking?
I went to a local classic car garage & they feel that the booster return rod is a bit shorter than the original thereby causing a delay in the master cylinder piston making contact & bring the brake pedal up quickly.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have a Ford rod it would be ajustable. From the 68 manuel. page 2-4

It’s a Midland type repro booster from WCCC & it wasn’t adjustable that I could tell?

I don’t know if this is your problem, but the rod that goes into the rear of master cylinder should be adjustable.

Thanks catlover, yes that’s the issue, I didn’t realize the rod was adjustable. Now I do & can make the adjustment with a tool I purchased on Amazon. I have the Cougar shop manual showing the adjustment info.

Hello to all on the community,

i have a 1968 cougar that i just did a full restoration on the engine bay, powertrain and braking system.

I am also having issues with a low brake pedal.

My car is a factory p.s., p.b., a’/c car.

I purchase a reproduction Bendix style brake booster thru WCCC and i am having issues with understanding what exactly is going on.

I replaced all the braking hard lines (purchased thru WCCC), rubber flex lines (purchased thru WCCC), wheel cylinders in the rear (purchased thru WCCC) as well as front calipers, booster (replica 1969 Bendix style thru WCCC) and correct reman master cylinder from WCCC.

purchased all my parts from WCCC, also my engine is new and produces 18-20” vacuum at idle.

any help would be much appreciated.

Do you mean the pedal sits low when not being pushed or when brakes are applied?

If the latter, I would suspect air in system. Make sure calipers are on the right side. Bleeders should point aft not up.

The brake pedal sits at 5.75” from the floor/ firewall to the forward side of the brake arm.

When I use my hand and lightly compress the pedal till the free play is gone the pedal is at 4.25” forward side of the brake pedal…

You mentioned the calipers…

The bleeders should be on the bottom side of the caliper, not on the top side of o read your message correctly…

Bleeders still on top but should point toward rear of car rather than straight up.

Correct that how they are installed and positioned…

Thought it was weird when you had stated aft..

And then I thought you’re talking on the bottom, because I’m like how are you gonna get the air out of the caliper if the bleeders are on the bottom??
