West Coast Classic Cougar is proud to announce that we are now able to get original rear view mirror lenses “re-silvered” at a reasonable price! See the section on our website here.
Chances are, your original rear view mirror lens is tarnished / dull / ugly after all these years. Now you can send us your lens (after you carefully remove it from the casing and package it well) and we’ll get it restored for you. You can opt to get your specific lens back (will take 3-6 weeks, write your name on the front of the glass w/ sharpie) or we can try to match the condition of your lens with one of our in-stock restored ones. Restored lenses are $49.85 exchange.
Another option we’re offering is this: We take a re-silvered lens and install it into a used original Grade “A” mirror casing and sell you the whole assembly. These assemblies are $109 outright.
Keep in mind that any scratches or blemishes on the glass surface will remain after re-silvering, since the silver is applied to the back side of the glass. Also, in some rare cases, the glass itself can become slightly stained over the years due to its porousness, so some lenses that have been exposed to the elements will end up with subtle stains in the glass, even after being restored. These are the potential risks / disadvantages of re-silvering an original lens. On the plus side, however, you get a brilliant, clear reflection and preserve the originality of your car.
So… how do you get the old lens out without breaking it, and then re-install the restored one? We made a video to explain the process, to show some of the differences in mirrors year-by-year, and to critique the current reproduction mirrors on the market. Check it out below, or watch on YouTube. I’m happy to report that I successfully replaced my own '68 mirror lens immediately after shooting this video.

Lastly, here’s a picture to show you all the variations of rear view mirrors from 1967-1973. There are six different casings and three different lenses used. The main differences, other than shape, are the day/night knobs and the way they mount to the windshield.
That’s all for now! Thanks for your continued support, and we hope this will be a useful service. Until next time!
