New GTE Exhaust Tips but better!

My son and I are getting close to finishing the restoration of his 1968 Cougar XR7 J Code car. We have done a few upgrades along the way, such as a new 351W-4V engine replacing the original 302 engine which was missing, GTE blacked out style tail lights, and Hooker Comp headers with a full dual 2.5 inch exhaust system. We wanted to go with the GTE style split exhaust tips as well which I think look good. So we bought a new pair of the repro ‘Mustang’ GT tips, which are made from 2 inch diameter pipe size.

But when they arrived, and I saw how small they were compared to the 2 1/2 inch exhaust pipe, I just couldn’t bring myself to install them, as they would have drastically restricted the exhaust exit point flow and sound. So we grabbed some 2 1/2 pipe, had it bent up at a muffler shop, and then dropped it off at a good friend of mine for a little custom fabrication work.

The result? GTE style exhaust tips but now in a 2 1/2 pipe size. Comparing the side by side photos, you can see how much bigger, beefier, and down right meaner the new larger tips appear. Totally awesome in my opinion! I will drop them off at the chrome shop next week so they look original, but I can’t wait to see what they look like installed!

Hope you enjoy the photos.

Nice.

Those look good. Did you consider stainless steel so the chrome process could be omitted? Either way you’ll have a great end result.

Good suggestion. Stainless is probably cheaper than chrome.
