New member seeking knowledge

Hello community,

New member here, and first time Cougar owner.

I just left a deposit on a 68 Cougar and am taking delivery next week. I cannot contain myself. I’ve been lurking on the message boards and decided to join.

In my adolescent youth, i was a little import street racer type and used to do all the work and mods myself. Lets just say ive matured a bit in my taste.

A little about my car:

1968 std bought from what believe was the second owner. Its been stored in a warehouse for years.

It has the 302 V4 with a 4 speed tranny. 75,900 original miles (Per the seller). Saddle interior with the decor option, factory AC, all original and untouched under the hood and inside. Found a tiny bit of bubbling under the paint in the front portion of the rear wheel wells. Found out it has Gas shocks in the rear, not sure how i feel about that yet. Paint job on it leave something to be desired. Orange peel all over, which ive already bought supplies for to wet sand and polish. All the trim is there but as you would imagine, needs to be polished. Tail lights and headlight work perfectly, Factory luggage rack.

Paid 9500 for her. Not sure if i overpaid slightly, but i loved the fact that it hasn’t been messed with. No crash damage that i noticed. Unfortunately, doesn’t have the factory wheels or a spare.

Trying to figure out what im going to do first. Any must do mods or maintenance that i should knockout right off the bat?
Poor quality pic from the seller

Glad to see you got that car. I went to see this car a few months ago, liked the car not the sellers brother that showed it to me. I drove up from San Diego to Victorville a 3 to 3.5 hour drive. The car was stuck in the back of a warehouse completely filthy. Still took the time to look it over and came to the same opinion as you. Opened the hood and there was no battery. I asked the brother if I could hear it run and he said if I was serious he would get it running. I drove all the way from San Diego, how much more serious could I have been. He wasn’t even going to get it running then, I was suppose to come back at a later date. I just left. Happy someone else had a better experience and purchased the car. I ended up with a 67 6.5 4spd, PS, PDisk, A/C car. I really liked the color combo on this one and of course the 4spd.

Haha, yeah, the seller’s brother was not exactly polite. He said i was “Talking shit,” because i was pointing out that there was rust, amongst other things that was wrong with car. There was no gas in the car when i got there. Luckily he ran to the gas station and bough about a half gallon that had it running for about 10 minutes.

I forgot to mention that part of getting the car “tightened up” involved putting in sway bars and an export brace. All those changes really did make a difference in the way the car handles.

Welcome and congrats on both your new purchase and coming to the other side as far as car choice. I won’t bother giving you the will reading speech from “Gran Torino” (lol). I’ve dealt with sellers with the same attitude, and after a couple of minutes of douchebaggery, usually leave. You’ve come to the right place for information. There are a lot of people on this forum that are very experienced, and willing to pass on their knowledge without being smarmy. I’ve only had mine for a bout a year, and have had a million questions on mine, and gotten a LOT of help, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Nice car. Can’t wait for some more pictures

Thank you guys. I’ve already found a wealth of knowledge here. Now I’m just waiting for deliver to put it all to use.

Welcome! That looks like a nice clean car – would love to see more photos when you get it home. Is it a true 302 (2V)/4-speed car? That would be a rare cat indeed.

It’s actually a 302 4V /4 speed. I checked the door tag. I already purchased the deluxe Marti report. I’m curious to see what the numbers are for it
