New power steering control valve, need some help

1970 Mercury Cougar. I just replaced my old power steering control valve with a new one, only one problem, one of the four lines doesn’t fit. The large line fits and two of the 5/16 diameter lines connect but the fourth line doesn’t. The fourth line is also 5/16 in diameter, the receiving end is only 3/16 however. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi Cougarfann,
I may be wrong about this but I was reading that down to '67 or 8 there was a 3/16" pump receiving end connection that proved unreliable. This was changed for the '68 model year onwards for a 5/16". Might I suggest that you have an early series control valve, and you need to change it!. At least this is as I understand it- check the West Coast Classsic Cougar Power Steering online catalogue to confirm. They strongly urge if you have the early series valve to use the later version (and swap the hose for the later 5/16" fitting version) which, if you have a 70, you should have on your car! I hope this helps!

Peter you are correct. 1967 used the smaller 1/4" port that was changed to 5/16" in 68 to handle the pressure safely.
