New wheels are rusting

I bought a set of chrome plated, steel Magnum 500 wheels back in November and they are beginning to rust. I have contacted the seller, but while I wait, is there something I should be doing to prevent/slow the process?

I never drive the car in winter or in the rain, and it’s always parked under the carport. I use water with a little dish soap to wash the car and wheels, and dry with a shammy.

Not good. Brillo pads is what I used back in the day.

Rubbing compound

This product works great. https://www.big45metalcleaner.com/

I did this in about 5 minutes.

After you clean it I have had good luck using Loctite 290 adhesive sealant.

Put a thin coat on and let it dry over night. You will see a white powdery coat on the chrome.

It wipes right off then you can wax.

The 290 plugs up the holes in the chrome that are letting rust come to the top.

By the nature of the material, it will eventually rust though that is very fast to me. It will be interesting to see what the seller has to say.
