No Interior Lights

Hello all,

I’m at the point in the 1970 XR7 restoration where I’ve put the battery in and started checking the lights. As expected, there are issues. When I opened the driver’s side door I saw the driver’s side kick panel light illuminated but the only other light that was illuminated was the light in the floor shifter. I reached over to the interior light switch on the dash panel and flipped it on. By doing this, all of the lights went out. I thought for sure I blew a fuse due to a positive wire being grounded out somewhere, but all fuses were good. I do not have the inside door wiring, radio wiring, or the rear sail panel light wiring connected yet but all that wiring is taped off so it shouldn’t ground out. Perhaps I have an incomplete circuit somewhere. The headlight switch is new. I plan to start checking all the grounds and the light switch on the dash panel first. Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Thank you

Dave

Do you have a aftermarket radio? Biggest mistake is the installer thinks the plug is power and ground. NOPE THE CONNECTOR IS POWER FOR THE RADIO AND POWER FOR THE LIGHTS in the radio. DASH LIGHTS GET FRIED.
Sorry for the caps. Phone

I am having similar issues with my 1968 XR7 GT - Most of the interior lights are not working. I have checked the fuses and most were good. I plan to start with checking the grounds. Some of the bulbs could be bad or have very corroded connections as well. I think a bad headlight switch can lead to a lot of problems but it looks like you have a new one.

Mike,

Good to know for when I install the radio but I haven’t installed on yet.

Thanks

Dave

Steve,

I might have a bad headlight switch regardless of it being new. I will consider this. I can’t remember where I bought it but I have already had two other new parts that turned out to be bad so I guess anything is possible.

Get yourself a cheap tester. One with a probe and light. Connect it to a known good ground and check for power at the sockets. If power at the sockets and correct bad ground.
If no power then work backwards to switch, etc. it’s a process of elimination

I had two culprits when it came to my interior and dash lights not working. The first issue was corrosion on the fuse holders. It took a lot of filing on the fuse holder for the courtesy lights and clock to consistently stay on.

For the dash lights it was a combination of corrosion on the fuse holders and corrosion in the headlight switch.
