Rare Matchbox Mercury Cougar sets record at $29,500 at auction
I believe it. It is a very rare car and there probably were multiple collectors who really wanted it.

Start your collection today with the 2026 Auto World slot car release of the 1st year Cougar. Only available at a Loves Truck stop. Except the small one here in my town dang it. My mom bought a Matchbox every Sunday after church at the corner store. Late 60’s through well into the 70’s. As far as I know they’re still in her attic.

OK- so why is this car so very rare? Just color? With the box? How can you verify production?
Wish I would have kept SOME of my old Hot Wheels!!! Don’t remember a Cougar that stood out???
ALWAYS loved the red lines on the Hot Wheels!!! Would love to see what Greeny would look like with some skinny red lines???
I’ve got a massive collection of my Hot Wheels and Tonka and Dinky and Matchbox cars from the 1960’s and 1970’s. All of them have been unboxed and enjoyed because that’s what you did with them as a kid.
