First time this far into my engine and found cast numbers 1 and 2 to differentiate the original orientation of the two heads, but i just spotted these stamped numbers that I don’t understand. Anyone able to decipher?
It’s something a machine shop stamped on the head. It is meaningless.
Ugh. There’s the final nail in the coffin of the <60K miles narrative. (Edit, fixed the alligator. He always eats the bigger number. I retained something from elementary math!)
Still quite possible that somebody did a valve job and/or installed hardened valve seats over 50+ years even with just 60k miles (like I did).
The pistons are now out of the block and are stock C-90E-D, with 351 2V cast onto the sides, so again, another head scratcher. I don’t have an accurate dial bore gauge, so I ordered one today and will pick up some large micrometers tomorrow. The pistons look good, so if I can get away with a hone and new rings I’d be very happy.
The engine has obviously been out before, but for what I can’t fathom. It has non-stock Felpro head gaskets, the intake valves have FoMoCo on them which appear to be stock 1.84int and 1.54ex, and I don’t see signs hardened seats were installed.
A 50+ year old engine has likely been apart in the past. Don’t over think it. Just do what you set out to do and give it a rest.
