So I brought my 67 GT to a car show this past Sunday. I got there early and parked in the “67” group and a couple of cars later, another 67 Cougar showed up. He came over and we talked about our cars. Then he showed me that his car was a rare hi-po 289 and had a special fender badge (I should have taken a picture of it since I can’t for the life of me remember what it read) located in front of the wheel well like the 65-66 Mustangs had. It was a square emblem. Has anyone heard of this?
Other oddities were his side view mirror, which I’ve never seen or heard of before. It was a sport like mirror with a spherical mirror holder and the base was made of two parts. He also claimed his car came with a space saver spare option which again, I never heard of. He said his car was built towards the end of 67. Would these things be on a Marti report?
Yes, the Marti report should tell exactly what the car is. Space saver spares were an available option on some model year Cougars. I do not recall right now if 1967 was one of those years, maybe. There were zero 289 Hi-Po Cougars ever built. Perhaps it was the regular 289-4V engine in that car. No Cougar had a factory installed emblem in front of the front wheel well. If any fender emblem was installed it was behind the wheel well, like on your own 1967 GT. The mirror sounds like it might have been the 1968 XR-7G style mirror. My guess is that the owner of that car is either blowing smoke or has no idea what they are talking about. In order to believe his story he would need to back it up with documentation, like a Marti report or other factory paperwork.
Yes, the mirror looked similar but the base had a separate “adaptor” base. So there were four screws to mount the mirror. Looked pretty weird. Like this, but I guess that’s how the XR7-G mounted them.
There were never any 289 HP Cougars and Kevin Marti would know - there were none. The guy has a fake Cougar. The mirror is another thing that he can’t prove.
