I have seen topics on bumper guards but they do not answer my issue.
1967 Cougar XR7 GT
I cannot get the front bumper guards to line up with the bracket and the bolt under the valence. If I mock fit to the top bracker on the bumper, the bottom of the guard is 4 to 5 inches away from the bottom bolt and it does not line up or align with the valance.
Has anyone experienced issues installing the front bumper guards. Thank you in advance… Lou
The part number you have provided is the ‘basic’ number for front bumper guards. In the Ford and Lincoln-Mercury MPC ( Master Parts Catalogue ) ALL bumper guards for ALL models are found with the basic part number of 17996 ( RHS ) and 17997 ( LHS ), so when you show the part number of 17996-7 that’s the way the MPC indicates the TWO basic numbers for a part that has a RHS ( always ending in an even number ) and a LHS specific part ( always ending in an odd number ) [ for the 1969 and 1970 Cougar there is only one basic number for the bumper guard, which is 17996 so it is used for both the RHS and the LHS - it’s the same part on both sides ]
For the 1967 Mustang the complete part numbers are C7ZZ-17996-A and C7ZZ-17997-A ( the C7ZZ prefix denotes 1967 Mustang service parts ). The 1967 Cougar front bumper guards would have complete part numbers of C7WY-17996-A and C7WY-17997-A ( where the C7WY denotes 1967 Cougar service part numbers ).
So you see ( as other members have indicated ) that if you ordered bumper guards just based on the number 17996-7 you could very well have ended up with Mustang parts ( if you hadn’t watched out for the prefix letters and numbers which would have specified which decade, year and car line the parts were applicable to ).
Here’s a link to a quick guide ( by no means definitive ) for Fords unique part numbering system: https://www.fordification.com/tech/partnumbers_overview.h
Have you tried comparing the guards that you have with the photos on the WCCC website? Or perhaps post photos of the ones that you have here on this site.
Thank you for the details. Great informaiton and that is probably what happened. I do not have the correct ones. They don’t line up no matter what I do and I have a profressional paint and body person working with me. He is baffled… I have been researching for days and cannot land on what I think is the best nor can I find anything. I did find on Ebay a person selling front bumper guards and advertised as taken off his 1967 cougar but they don’t look anything like what I have, what WCCC is showing so it is very confusing. The WCCC has them pictured but not available and I have noted to be notified if they get them and I did that many months ago.
Again thank you for the details… and if you are aware of a set please let me know.
I am not sure of my 1967 XR7 GT is different from the base model, or an XR7 or a GT.
