Folks,
I am curious to know if anyone has wondered about this verbiage on the Personalized Statistics Report from Kevin Marti regarding a car’s unique features.
On my report, it states after all the numbers breakdown, that it is ‘That Cougar’. On other reports I’ve seen, it states as ‘One of Those Cougars’
Does this signify or help clarify that a vehicle is truly a 1 of 1 compared to 1 of many?
Please keep to the topic at hand and be respectful of other posters.
Hard to say without seeing the actual report.
My 71 XR-7 is one of one, “That Cougar”
My White 70 XR-7 is one of two, "One of Those Cougars "
My Yellow 70 CJ Cougar is one of one, “That Cougar”
Royce,
Here is the report on my car. As you can see, it does state is ‘That Cougar’
Maybe mine is a 1 of 1 cougar then?
I think speed control is more important then the tires.
Yes, yours is 1 of 1 that had that specific combination of body style, drivetrain, paint color, interior trim, and options.
Sure. Most Cougars are one of one due to some trivial difference from thousands of other similar cars. This doesn’t affect value or desirability.
The way Kevin structured the statistics is in the form is a single rather long sentence. The different options are applied as filters in the same order but the net effect at the end is the same.
While it seems that many Cougars are one of one, the majority are not. Run the numbers for 67 standard lime frost Cougars ordered for dealer stock and there are many thousand identical ones. As soon as you apply XR7 as a filter you have narrowed the sample by maybe 70%. With 18 colors possible, once you move away from the very popular colors, a massive reduction in sample size kicks in. The Cougars we seem to be most interested in finding tend to be both rare and desirable, so the Marti Reports reflect that.
In the end, the stats are just good fun. With a few notable exceptions they have more impact on pride of ownership than value. They tell you what you already know: your Cougar is pretty damn special.
I always thought the same thing. My Marti report shows that the AM radio is what makes my car 1 of 1. Yet 75% of 70 Cougars had AM radios, and that’s the most boring option on my car. But only 4% had the styled steel wheels. It would be nice if filters for rarer options like the wheels or speed control were applied closer to the bottom where the production numbers start getting really low. But in the end, it doesn’t really matter because the results are the same. I am just thankful that Kevin Marti has all of this data and makes it available for us!
Thanks everyone for your responses. I really do appreciate the feedback. I know my cougar is not so unique that it is something rare and valuable, but to me she is and that is all that matters because I know she is the only one that left the factory that way.
Specific to your question:
“Is that cougar” is singular. It is preceded by the Marti report VIN
“Is one of those” means two or more with identical breakdown.
The important rare aspects are debatable, trendy even but big blocks/special motors, manual transmission and trim package seem to be the basic way car guys differentiate. I joke about mine being a 1 or 1 at car meets because it has bumper guards. The fact that Ford has a database with so much detail is really something I am proud of. IMO
Exactly.
Definitely engine /transmission codes drive prices up or down. Everyone wants a big block and a 4sp. Most would settle for that with a less desirable paint/trim code.
