Orange peel removal and polishing out on concave surfaces.

On the end caps on my Shelby the color sanding wasn’t done on the concave portion of the end caps. I have never done color sanding and being it’s a curved surface I was wondering if anyone had pointers or a good Youtube video for pointers?

Thanks, Keith

For a concave (or convex for that matter) surface, I like using a flexible object to support the color sanding paper. 3M NO. 20 (p/n 05526)WETORDRY Sponge pad is one example. Norton and Meguiars E7200 is another one.

I always sand WET, and stay away from the edges the best you can. NEVER sand on the edge because you apply so much more pressure there that you will sand thru the clear or color coat before you know it.

It’s not curved to the outside, ( Convex) It’s curvature is to the inside. However, it does have many edges that could easily be burnt through. This is actually my concern. Not to mention where to start grit wise and finishing afterwards.

You should start with finest grit (2000) and see if this will remove the o/p , usually this works and is easily buffed.

As Carlton mentioned, start with 2000 and work it wet with a drop of Palmolive soap in your warm water bucket etc. as a lubricant.
Squeegee as you go to check your progress
You can always move up to 1500 if you need to get more aggressive
There are several 3m sanding foam pads to choose from to back up your paper
Also all sandpaper is not equal
Some of the German made is the best
I prefer Farecla products for all color sanding
This product can be hand buffed w/o the use of a machine with good results
A polisher is recommended over a orbital buffer on all exposed edges
