I love vintage marketing and advertising materials. Here are some of the newspaper ads that I have run across or that fellow enthusiasts sent me.

Some interesting stuff -

Does anyone have those golf balls from the last add ? I would love to have a sleeve.

Phillip,
If you search Newspaper Archives for the Syracuse Post Standard Jan 10, 1968 page 28 you will find an ad featuring the Cougar. The first search is free.

Propayne –

regarding the ad from Dick Clapp – notice the GT-E in the picture of the car lot. They sold 8F93W537848. By any chance do you have a better picture of this ad that when blown up would show the car more clearly? Thanks.

Jim

Well Jim, although there is no photo, I remember speaking with many years ago, our 1st conversation, regarding a GT-E sold in Toledo, of course I don’t remember which dealer, but I remember seeing it drive by me, as if it was yesterday, if I remember correctly, the owner is known by you, but keeps his info and where a bouts in SE Mich. a secret, not far from Toledo.

Hey Jim - I believe that ad came from this source:

Unfortunately, resolution is limited.

Phillip –

Thanks, I was afraid that would be the case.

Jim

Here are some more - plus some blurbs that mention the XR7-G.

Interesting - I’ve seen that photo of Darrell Droke’s car before, but never the Crank Shaft Company advertisement. There is a 1 page article in one of the period car magazines, I think Car Craft, that used that photo and one of the engine compartment. Eagle cylinder heads for the 289 / 302 are very rare.

This is an excerpt I scanned from a recent article on the history of the Gurney/Westlake/Eagle heads plus a photo from Car Craft (?) of the engine bay of a Cougar that was at AAR in '67.

You can imagine Gurney’s frustration at barely losing the '67 TA championship to the Shelby Mustangs. 1967 was an incredible year for Gurney and could have easily included the Trans-Am championship if Mercury had let him use his heads on the BME Cougars.

Oh, what might have been.

Just spent a fun hour searching through the free California Digital Newspaper Collection, which you can filter by decade: https://cdnc.ucr.edu

That wikipedia page is a terrific resource Rat - thanks!

Quite a few of these that I am posting I scanned from my collection of vintage racing programs and newspapers.

Some more ads - I’ll expand my selections with some that appeared in magazines.

And of course the “Win-A-Car-Nival” ad with the G is courtesy Mr. Pinkerton.
