Working on a project with a guy that is looking to possibly replicate original mufflers for our Cougars. He currently produces Boss and Cobra Jet Mustang versions.
Those of you that are fortunate to have original mufflers, we need your input. We are looking for the imprinted casting numbers found on the driver and passenger side mufflers from Cougars 1968-73. All original mufflers installed on Cougars normally have a “W” as the 3rd character.
We are trying to accurately determine production line installed mufflers. The Mercury MPC, doesn’t necessarily include those numbers actually found on Cougars from back in the day. The MPC indicates what is available and ‘fits’.
Pictures would be great, but the complete numbers are what we are after. Please include whether the muffler number is from the driver or passenger side, a partial VIN number is helpful (tells the plant, engine, and approximate build date) for 1970 H code (351-2V’s) if you can please include whether it is 351W or 351C.
I have sent a sample of a muffler for dissection. From previous mufflers, we expect to find 4 chambers. The baffle placement is also being investigated to get old Cougar sound.
Removed from 0F91H506xxx. Single exhaust passenger side, 351W engine. We did not expect to see a 1969 part on a 1970, Dearborn must have been using up remaining stock.
Its a “J” code. Both mufflers are the same, just reversed. They have the same numbers on them. Tried to post pictures, but files to large for computer.
The '68 J Code Cougar I am restoring (built in SJ in Dec 67) still had the factory exhaust when I acquired the car - mufflers stamped with FoMoCo logo and part #s C8WA-5230-A / 8-31-67-A and C8WA-5232-E / 11-7-67-A. Will have to check which is DS and which is PS - they are off the car now. Not sure if I will restore these for re installation, but have been told by various people that they are desirable. Can anyone tell me 1) why the part numbers are different (assume the second number is a mfg date?) 2) whether these could/should be restored and reinstalled (is it cost effective?) and 3) if these would have value to someone doing a true concours restoration? Thanks.
I think they would have some value to someone, if they are in a condition where they could be refurbished. If I were in your position, I would at least store them for the future - definitely do not just chuck them. At the very least, they can be handed off to the next caretaker of your car
Here are the mufflers on my Monday October 13, 1969 built B2 Eliminator as well as the build sheet.
It looks like both mufflers were built on the 262nd day of the year which in 1969 would have been Friday, September 19th.

Scott - any update on the muffler availability? I would love to purchase a set of 1970’s for my 428CJ car! I recently picked up a 1969 XR7 390 with original exhaust mufflers. Also have a 1968 J code original exhaust, and a 1969 351W original as well. TIme to take some photos I guess! scott
Dave - are those mufflers for a 351C or 428CJ. My understanding is that the 351C would have 2 inch tail pipes, and the 428CJ should have 2 and 1/4 inch tail pipes. Is that correct? thanks, Scott
Those are on a Boss 302. In the Northeast we seldom see original exhausts as the salt on the roads up here eat them away from the outside. My April 1973 version of the M-E-L MPC lists the following which might give an indication of tail pipe o.d.'s.
