Owls Head Auctioneer

This weekend we were up in Maine at my late in-laws house that’s not far from Owls Head Transportation Museum. My wife is acting as executor (on behalf of her 4 siblings) to arrange the sale of the property this year. As part of that, she had set up a meeting with a local auction house to come in and appraise some antique furniture for their next auction.

It turned out that the appraiser is also an auctioneer who does the Owls Head auto auction and was the one that presided over the auction of the CJ 4-speed GT-E. We’d gotten talking about cars in general before that and it was when I showed him a picture of B3Cat that he told me he handled the GT-E auction. He didn’t remember or seem to know much about the car, although he has a classic pickup of his own, and I got the sense it was just another lot, albeit an interesting one, to him. He thought it sold for $125-135K when it actually went for $228K. I was able to bring him up to date, including the BAT auction and eventual sale post-auction.

So, just a mildly interesting brush with Cougar history!

Curious how you don’t remember a lot that hammered for nearly a 1/4 million. They must do a lot of business.

Their auto auction isn’t B-J or Mecum by any means but it’s a decent one that draws a mix of high-dollar cars and affordable classics. The top seller of their catalog for 2015 was a 1929 Duesenberg Model J that sold for $1.275M.

A friend of mine happened to be in the area and went in Owls Head before the 4 speed, CJ, GT-E sold at auction.

He took some pics and sent them to me.

Little did I know then that I’d get to babysit and even drive the car.
