Paced laps at “The Bend”…

I sometimes wonder if I am doing the right thing driving her as much as I do… I bought an early 90’s Street Machine built 1969 that had been coddled and not used … body perfect, no rust, good hood, nice interior… mechanically stuffed because not driven. I then spent a year getting the mechanicals sorted… and put 8000 miles on it in three years, dropping the roof every moment I get for as long as I can stand the whingeing!

So now there are stone chips, the constant flexing is stuffing the convertible top, bushings are squeaking… I guess that the car is worth less than when I finished it, because I use it whereas maybe should I baby it?

I also have a fast Passat, a VR3600 motor / 4motion flappy paddle direct shift thingo. You would think I would take that to the bend, but no… I take the Cougar!

“The Bend” is the second longest permanent road course after the Nurburgring… but that started life as normal roads, so it is the world’s longest purpose built racetrack road course at 7.77 km or just under 5 miles…

It is even longer than Bathurst (6.2km) and contains 35 turns and a 1km (2/3 mile) straight.

This was a “Paced” event, the cars are assembled in a marshaling yard, and we do an assembly lap. Filtering on to the track set up some big gaps. The assembly lap was fantastic as I was behind a big block 64 Impala set up to do straight lines. He would trundle around a corner and punch it, and… well (when in Rome) so would I! We ended up roll racing a fair bit in the 5miles to the starting grid.

I am behind the yellow Monaro… t shirt , and no helmet! One of the Reps asked if he could join me in my car… sure if you can video the sighting lap with my phone…. Deal!

(The passenger is taking shots as he was filming My car is RHD remember)

From the formation grid we had three paced laps past the post… sighting lap at 50%, the pace car would speed up to 80% then 100% of “pace”

I don’t know why the photos uploaded on the wrong order but you get the picture!

Anyhow finally loaded the video!

Just remember this is not racing… this is just paced laps… and the video is the sighting lap… it took forever to string out the 40 odd cars… after the first lap and a bit of video, the phone was put away… and we started leaning in!

It was freaking awesome half was through the second lap we got to press on, and by the third lap it was full Donkey Kong!

My car has a stiff front end and 90’s technology brakes so I was able to stop ok… but by 15 miles in I was fading compared to modern cars. You could overtake on straights before braking zones… this meant that fast cornering cars could not pass me because I was getting fantastic drive and using my 408 cubes to squat and drive… so through the chicanes I let some of the quicker cornering cars through then play catch and release on the straights…

It was so much fun! So glad I took the old girl!

Thanks to Royce for letting me know the trick to do the alternator belt….

From underneath ! But I don’t fit under this car unless I put the stands in, so did the best I could from above …

I never drive it in the rain… so this is a rare shot

The did the hour and a half freeway haul to the track…

Eclectic bunch…

Those McLarens are weapons!

Proud of you representing “us”!!!

Ive done the same over the last 2 decades. My 69 vert is on its 6th set of tires!! Alot of that rubber was left on tracks, and a few streets

GOOD on YOU!

That’s FANTASTIC Jaymo! I’m of the mindset that these are cars to be used and enjoyed. Looks and sounds like you did just that.

Thanks, for the sentiment… I did the laps convertible top and all four windows down. On the last shot down the straight I backed off at just over an indicated 110 miles an hour when I felt a weird driveline vibration… and the wind! talk about buffeting!

I have also developed an annoying squeak in the last month, you can hear it in the video on the overrun when I am trailing into or through the corners… I am hoping it is just dry bushings, but if anyone knows for certain, let me know.

My formation lap with the Chev Impala was hilarious… he looked like he had six inches of tyres on the front and twelve on the back, his brakes stunk after three or four big stops. He couldn’t turn at all, but he could launch! We just roll raced just in line rather than side by side.

I was really happy with my brakes and my turn in, I have a big front bar and the Alston Chassis Works anti bump steer kit so it turned in great, surprisingly for old school steering box.

On our rough Aussie roads I get big axel hop issues if I hit any bumps, but the track was so smooth I had no wheel hop….

Strictly 8/10 through the curves I didn’t want any sideways and risk it catch and roll (no helmet, no roof, T-shirt and a lap sash) we felt exposed like a couple of squids in an open tin can… my baggy rear end was disconnected from the front the transition was not great, but once pointed out of the corner I could stand on it and it hauled… it hated the tight chicane!

The fact the front brakes held on for the event surprised the heck out of me, about 15 miles into it they were fading but predictably, so just braked a bit earlier…

I had to let some of the modern V8s past with their big Brembos , they couldn’t out drag me enough out of the corners to pass clear before the braking zone. The Maclarens… that is another story, they were wild.

My vinyl Decore buckets don’t hold you, and the wooden steering wheel got slippery! My passenger put the phone down and hung on!

BTW that Impala is a 62.

Porterfield brake pads are amazing for factory brakes!

Nice action - good to see

That Impala was a RHD factory assembled in Oz Impala, Holden would buy a bunch of Canadian knocked down bodies and chassis and assemble them … we may have been lagging, or I may just be wrong…all of the Impala years between the “crabs arse” and (I think in 65’s changed to) the forward look, look the same to me.

Hi Leon

I have been wanting to this since I saw something with you doing laps (Lakeside?) … you were doing open laps? Paced was enough for me !

Was a lot of fun doing laps at Lakeside. Ran the Eliminator a couple of times. Wasn’t game to run the 428 as it would be out of brakes in a couple of laps with that boat anchor out front.

I sometimes miss that car

If it’s squeaky control arms these might help. Haven’t tried them yet.
