paint code x on 69 vert xr7

hi all, I was wondering if the paint code for 68 presidential blue or 68 wellington blue is the same as paint code x which my 69 has. Just trying to match as close as possible. which would be the best brand to use. Car will be painted this spring and wanting it to be the best shine for resonable price. thanks all. kevind

1969 X code is called Dark Blue Poly and is simular if not the same as 1968 X code Wellington Blue Poly to the best of my knowledge. Some one correct me if I am wrong.

I am currently restoring a 69 XR-7 convert in “Presidential Blue”. I have looked into the color and found that PPG can mix the color from their library. I have not found for a fact the colors are the same, but they do look exactly the same. So, let’s share info on this!

Thanks, Bill

I think that presidential blue is the same color, used on Mercury in 69 but not cougars. Is yours a code X or just like the color. Mine is code X and I am painting it that color. Not sure what kind of paint though. Do you have yours painted yet? Pics please? I think some kind of metallic with a small flake maybe. Link below compares the differnt colors. kevind

According to the PPG book for 1968 and 1969 Mustang colors, Paint code X was for Presidential Blue in both years. However, the number is different between the two years. In 1968, the number associated with paint code X, Presidential Blue Poly is 13356, while in 1969 the associated number is 2056. So that suggests something changed between those two years, even if it wasn’t the color itself.

Also, I found images of the Cougar paint code books at http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/default.aspx and the same PPG numbers are associated with 1968 and 1969 Presidential Blue Poly.

Thanks all for your help and to you Bill. It finally seems as if I am going to make some progress on the cat you inspected for me three years ago in Rode Island. It has been a long wait but I am looking forward to maybe driving her this year. kevind
