Paint Code

Does anyone happen to know the correct paint for a '67/8 instrument cluster housing? I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be gloss or semi gloss or even a flat finish.

I have usually just been able to clean up the originals. They appear to be a mat or semi gloss white.

Since you want it to reflect light - more gloss = more light,

I’ve shot these areas in the past with gloss or semi-gloss white then applied a coat (its clear) of reflective paint, same goes with the inside of the taillight housing. The reflective paint is available at many home improvement or farm type stores as it often used for country mail boxes for one application.

Worked for me

I may actually use a higher gloss, but I would like to know what is actually correct. Quite a bit of the original paint is peeling off so I need to do something with it.

I know this is a little bit off the post question but not much. I want to restore my instrument cluster. How hard is it to remove? I took off the cluster pad looking for more screws but didn’t see much. I know about the screws under the speedometer and the fuel / temp. What else holds the cluster in place? Speedo cable back screws? Is there a good image or step by step I could as reference?
Steven

Once you get the right hand side off, there is a threaded stud on the right hand side of the instrument bezel. All the rest you can get to from the front.

Sounds fairly easy. I want to fix, clean, oil my clock and paint the ends of the indicator needles. Thanks.

You will also have to disconnect the speedometer cable. The easiest way to get to it is through the heater/AC controls. Just take out the four screws that hold it in and let it hang.

Don’t forget the screws going up into the dash pad from the top lip of the cluster housing. I forget how many there are, though.

There are four at the top going straight up into the dash pad and two at the bottom of the bezel under the speedo and temp/fuel gauges. Sorry I didn’t mentions them before. I thought they would be easy enough to find.

Thanks a bunch. That will help me quite a bit. I am glad to hear I won’t have to hang upside down under the dash. I saw the screws in the cluster lip to the dash pad. Does the speedo cable just screw in or does it have a retaining clip?

Al this is not a
, I just need help.

Yes, if you are upside down, you are working too hard.

There is a nut that is coaxial with the speedo cable.

One last tip: put a rag or something soft over your steering column to protect it.

I’m watching this one closely, Steven. getting ready to stick a voltmeter conversion instead of the ampmeter. I just don’t fit under there.

This entire thread could be turned into the beginning of a nice How-To article on how to restore your instrument bezel and gauge cluster. Is there a tech article section here? Personally, I like the idea of a wiki. Everyone is free to edit the article to make it better faster. If we have one author, the editing process is slower and we can get into copyright issues.

No worries Steven. Not like I haven’t hijacked a thread or two in my day.

I think we should be creating how-to threads based on what happened yet again with TCCN. I’ve already started one for the restoration of '67/8 grilles. I don’t want to post it until I’m a little further along. It would be great if we had a section here to park them for people to reference. Maybe a subsection of the restoration and repair section. I think they should be locked so they don’t get plugged up with commentary. Any questions for the author could be accomplished with a new thread or a PM. Hopefully Bill or Jay will read this thread and comment.

Al I think that is a great idea about locking the article then answering questions in another thread. That way it can be interactive but article content dosen’t get lost in the post. If changes or add on’s get brought up the author can make the changes to the article.
