Re-painting my 69 Cougar to it’s original W-code Yellow or Meadowlark Yellow paint. The Jams are painted but the paint looks a shade brighter than it should be. Re-checked with paint shop and they followed the mixing formula for Ford W code paint which was indicated on the can. Does anyone have pictures of there W code painted Cougars the can share. Because its new paint will it look a little off than the original paint that was left on the car? Not using clear coat, using Acrylic Enamel. Another factory I was looking at the paint in direct Sun light which does make yellow appear brighter. Any thoughts?
Just make sure they have the right “yellow”. Also might want to double check that your car was actually painted code W yellow. Did you get the code from your door tag, or Marti Report?
I’m asking because they used several yellows in '69. I’ve seen a few “Bright Yellow” Eliminators repainted in the wrong pastel shade of yellow.
Never hurts to double check! Certainly easier to correct before the paint is on the car.
Well a fresh paint will always look brighter than the old paint, making it look like it’s the wrong shade, and this can even occur if you paint one part this week, and another part next week, then you could even get differences on those two parts, even if they are painted with paint from the same box.
To be really sure if the new paint is too brigth than the old, you need to deep clean the old paint with a rubbing compund and using a machine when doing tht work, the 3M Fast Cut rubbing compound is a very good product for this type of work, and also when using a polishing machine, do not have it t the highest speed, as it will be easier to burn the paint at too high speed.
When i get cars or part in for painting, i always do a deep clean with that rubbing compound first, then i check the color with the test panels i have painted, and also a color can have different shades on the same code,
The shades can aslo be a bit different from one paint producer to another.
And also, looking at pictures will do you no good at all, as the colors will look different due to various cameras, screens etc have different settings, specs etc.
A color needs to be checked live in normal daylight
My R code vert is W code yellow. I seem to remember more than one paint code for W code yellow, I think the shade varied slightly depending on the year. We found original paint on the cowl, cleaned it up & matched that.
The color has grown on me over the years. Bugs love it (seriously).
