Paint timing cover?

Should the timing cover be painted while out? Is engine paint Ok? Looks a bit rusty behind water pump
Alex

Yes and yes, I think that would be a good time to paint, also paint the water pump.

Do you think tbe antifreeze will destroy the paint under the pump?

I don’t know what you mean, I would not paint anywhere there is going to be fluid flowing. I meant paint the chain cover and the front of the water pump before installing it.

Is this a timing cover for a 351 Cleveland or a Windsor? I don’t think the Cleveland one was painted before the water pump was installed at the factory. It would be the same with the Windsor, but more of it shows.

It’s a 351c, there is a rust line behind the water pump on the timing cover. I sanded it, primed it and painted it.

I wonder how many times it rusted thru and antifreeze poured into the engine?

If the proper coolant is used rust would be a minor problem. Many people will just use tap water. It has a lot of nasty minerals oan or chemicals added to it that are not good for a cooling system. I am guilty of doing this in the past. I now only use anti freeze that comes mixed 50/50 with distilled water. I also add a product called “Wetter water” to aid in cooling. One can also ad some coolant anti rust as well.
Just the same the Cleveland timing cover was not one of the best ideas Ford ever had.
