Tried to research this one, but found nothing. Has anyone had any success with painting their arm rest pads? Is that a thing? I’ve painted hard vinyl parts quite easily, but am skeptical of the chances of success with painting things like soft vinyl pads. Any help is appreciated…
I have done this. I had a Black interior and used SIM vinyl die. Landau Black if I recall. They held up well. Be sure to clean them well. Then do it again to make sure. Any contaminates will be a problem.
I have not done the arm rests yet, but I did use the SEM vinyl product that badcatt mentioned. For that product, there is also a prep spray and an adhesion promoter. I used it on center console as well as the vinyl panels in the back so far. I may also try it on the rear seats as well. The Landau Black looks really nice. I got mine from Amazon.
same here. I have used the SEM Landau Black on my interior. It looks good. I cleaned the crap out of the parts with Simple Green 3 or 4 times before spraying. And I also used the adhesion promoter too. Good prep and light even coats and it will come out looking good.
Hi,
I’ve painted quite a bit of vinyl. I found SEM is the best product. Any part that is going to be making a lot of contact with people (door panels, arm rests, etc.) should be painted with an adhesive promoter first. I have painted without using the promoter and it worked okay, but it was in areas, like dash pads that aren’t often brushed against. Make sure you clean the part well, to remove previous cleaners, spray on the adhesive promoter and then paint on the vinyl color. The adhesive promoter I used was bought at Mustang Unlimited. It’s a clear spray, and dries in minutes. I painted gold vinyl interior pieces for my '69 Cyclone CJ, to a black ‘Landau’ color using SEM paint. It still looks like new after three years. A lot of people don’t know this, but you can actually paint carpet with the SEM paint too. Good Luck!
