Parking Brake Sticking

Over the past few months, I’ve noticed an issue with the parking brake on my 68 that is steadily getting worse. It holds the car just fine, but when I park on an incline (front of car pointed uphill), the brakes don’t release when I disengage the lever. At first, there would be a slight delay and then the brakes would let go with a slight popping sound. Now, however, I actually have to give it gas in reverse to overcome the sticking. The brake shoes and drums are relatively new and they work fine in all other respects. Any ideas where to start looking?

The cables rust internally

Thanks for the tip, Bill. I shot the ends of the cables with PB Blaster over my lunch break and we’ll see what happens when I leave the office later…

Something we used to do on watercraft was silicone lube the throttle and steering cables. Worked well on them and they see constant moisture so might not be a bad idea as a service point if you get it freed up.
