Pertronix II in my 1969 xr7

Has anyone installed the pertronics 2 ingnition system into a stock 351 windsor.

Have had a Pertronix 2 in my 69 351W for about 7 or 8 years along with Flamethrower coil and Pertronix power supply. Simple install and no problems. Engine is stock other than intake, carb and headers. Excellent life on cap and rotor. Not sure how many miles since install but this year alone over 3400. IMO big improvement over points and condenser.

S do i need the coil and the power supply? Its supposed to be plug and play with just the ingnitor.

I did not install mine but it has the relay, the Flamethrower coil and the ignition itself…works fine…and now that we reconfigured the wiring (took the red/orange off the “+” coil and put the purple/red-green on the “+” coil) the tach now works!

No need to change the coil. Won’t make any difference anyway. You do need to supply the Pertronix with 12 volts. You can use a relay like the Pedaptor or run a new wire from the back side of the ignition switch or if you have a standard you can find a source at the voltage regulator

Not necessary to change coil, I just did it as an upgrade. Kept stock coil as a spare. 12 volt power is important. Haven’t touched mine since 2016.

In 1981 summer I had my wisdom teeth pulled out. Soon I was turning 18 and parents GM insurance was no longer going to be available, especially with my grades… On the way home with cotton in my mouth X4, had Mom stopp at my local speed shop in Racine, Wisconsin and bought this Mallory dual point 255301. Had it recurved to this motor. I put the second set of points in it in 1998 before taking it to the U.K. Even ran it on 1 set sometimes. Flawless

Thanks for the info, I talked to tech support at pertronix my coil reads 3.0 ohms he said everything should work. As long as its not over 3.5 ohms. We shall see putting it in tommorow.

This is well timed post as my Pertronix 2 should be here tomorrow.
I read that the + coil wire coming from tach is 9V and figured I could pull off of that to trigger a relay and send full 12V to the Pertronix?
To the OP, I don’t understand what you were saying about the 3 ohms? Do you mean your existing coil should be at 3.5 or less?

Yes, according to the tech guy at petronix you dont need to replace the coil if it ohms out under 3.5ohms. with all the wires off. He didnt say anything about the Tach not working. From one of the posts he says to make the tach work i need to pull a wire off of my ignition switch for 12v. I will call tech support tommorrow to verify.

The Ignitor may create issues with the factory tach and cause it to be erractic or read incorrectly. That’s the problem that JoeViking was having. You can use a relay to supply 12V from the battery and trigger it off the Coil (+), or pull a wire from the ignition switch to the module - your call.

Works like a charm! We were surprised when the tach “fired” right up…we thought for sure there would be some puffs of smoke somewhere or nothing from the tach…it definitely was as simple as rearranging some of the wires…not sure why it was not installed correctly but it works fine thanks!

Well worth doing. My mechanic replaced the distributor, (installed Pertronix) Plugs wire and coil and car runs far better. Go figure 50 years of technology!
