So my 67 GT wouldn’t start. It seemed like there was no spark so I Pulled a plug and turned it over and sure enough, no spark. Opened the distributor and took out the Petronix module and found this.
The unit is about 4 or so years old. The ground wire looks like it has almost fried. I have a good 12V wire I ran straight from the ignition switch. I’ve heard of them failing, but not like this. Has anyone seen this before?
What coil were you using. It looks like maybe someone decided to run 12 volts to a very low impedence coil and exceeded the current capability of the Pertronix 1.
I replaced the Pertronix 1 in my Dad’s Corvette this spring. It failed and let the magic smoke out and I couldn’t get it back in. NPD had one on the shelf and they’re local.
Ford distributors up front are much easier than Chevy distributors in the back for this task.
I just checked the red wire under my 60x scope I have. It’s hard to tell 6 going on with the insulation. I can’t tell if it is where or if it’s from the ground burning out. I put a new one in today, and it fired right up.
Memory serves the insulation on those wire leads is pretty flimsy…I always slide a heat shrink tube over them to keep them from being damaged by the previously mentioned advance movement
The one I just installed is .030". For the 390, I had to push it all the way from the magnetic ring. I also ground the base a little since it was pretty close to the vac advance arm.
