As you can tell by the pictures, it isn’t a show car, but it is solid and it almost all there. It also looks like the car had less than 8500 miles when it was pulled out of the Hertz fleet.
I have also included pictures of the body work behind the passenger door and in front of the driver’s door. It also looks like the driver door has been replaced.
Everything under the car is super solid. The trunk and hood lips are solid and under the doors are solid. There is no evidence of rust from pinch weld to pinch weld. The only significant rust appears to be under the vinyl top and one spot at the passenger shock tower where the panels overlap.
The mileage in the owner’s manual at the date of sale was 8439. The car was used as a rental for 8439 miles before Mr. Locke bought it.
The warranty card shows the date that the warranty went into effect. You should try to contact Mr. Locke, it would be interesting to find out when he bought the car.
I plan on trying to contact Mr. Locke. The seller said he tried to contact him when he bought the car and he had no luck. I am pretty persistent though.
BigMatt great pictures. I found information that might give you background on your Cougar. I did a quick search and it appears that Mr. Locke passed away in 1995 at the age of 75. There is a listing for R.J. Locke Jr. that you might be able to follow up on for information about your Cougar.

It would be cool if there were a way to peel off the Subsequent Owner Registration sticker to see the original Hertz registration beneath it. Maybe a document conservator could do it without hurting anything.
One other thing the radio is a '67 unit as are the knobs.
Matt,
Amazing car, thank you for sharing photos. I’m glad you were able to pick it up. It is amazing how few XR7-G’s actually end up changing hands. I hope you are able to bring it to the Ford World Headquarters event in 2017.
I remember my first driver quality G, I purposely left the cover off so each time I went in the garage I could look at it, spent a fair amount of time just sitting in it taking it all in! Very rare to see that nice of console, dash wood grain, steering wheel and door panels. Obviously spent lots of time in the garage. Make sure it is insured for about $45k. Here is the radio knobs you will be on the lookout for, watch ebay long enough and an AM radio will come with them and you can resell the radio and get the knobs for free!
Wow, nice car, Matt. The interior couldn’t have seen that much sun judging from the still-red colored markings on the speedometer. It’s interesting to see the screw in the door panel on a driver’s side. I’ve seen others (including mine) with the screw on the passenger side, but never on the driver side.
Very cool! Congrats, and enjoy driving it a while before you decide to dive in deeper. IMO, time behind the wheel makes you forgive a lot of the “little things” that bother you right now. “Rusty top? Bah, no one can see them bubbles when you are doing 60mph!”
Don,
Great photo. Nice to hear that I’m not the only one who spent time playing cars with my son in an actual car. Taking it all in is certainly what being an Enthusiest is all about.
Before I know it my son will be asking for the keys, time certainly moves quickly.
