Possible '67 XR7 Purchase - Pre-purchase inspection

Hello,

I’m interested in getting a Cougar, and one popped up somewhat nearby for me (the Netherlands). I’ve already started diving into the videos and guides from West Coast Classic Cougar, but I’m wondering if the experts can already spot possible red flags and things to look out for based on the listing (see weblink)

Love to get your input/advice.

Thanks!

Heater has been bypassed, likely has a leaking heater core. With factory A/C, heater cores are a bit involved to replace. I see only the idler pulley remaining from the factory A/C components under the hood. “Powered by Ford”, valve covers were available starting in 1968. Missing fan shroud.

Not sure what that thing is on the passenger side shock tower? Strange looking brake booster.

Rear window molding is wonky at the top center. It has 1968 door wing windows.

Looks like it could be a decent car. Needs to go on a lift for a full in-person inspection. Hard to see in the photos, but I would check for imperfections under the vinyl top. Not as smooth as it should be, and wrong texture from OEM.

Clearly, it has had some previous owner’s modifications, that were for their tastes.

That one’s been on the market for a while. I would advise to contact/join the NL/BE club. Marcel is your man, send me a pm and I’ll give you his contact.

Don Rush (WCCC) does videos on prepurchase inspections and watch points. Search his YouTube channel.

In addition to tips above, it’s also missing the handle on the power steering dip stick.

Maybe that thing is a battery shut off?

Looks like that one has had recent rust repair in the areas front and back of the shock towers. The air cleaner is aftermarket as is the sticker on it - no Mercury ever had this air cleaner. Aftermarket repop hood scoop. I would keep looking for a better one.

Thanks for all the input!
Based on what I’ve been reading here and research online I think I’m going to pass on this specific Cougar. I’ll keep my eyes peeled for when another pops up.
