I am going to replace what appears to be the original ignition coil on my stock 1968 302-2V located on the top of the intake manifold. I am looking for recommendations regarding getting a stock replacement or maybe a “hotter” coil that will work better with a stock configuration. I do want the replacement to be in the same location, so that means no larger and “wild looking coils” to be mounted on the firewall. I welcome all comments before making a final decision. Cougar Community… gimme recommendations please. Thanks!
The OEM coils are high quality and last a lifetime if they don’t get damaged somehow. Meanwhile the reproductions often fail in a very short period of time. The way coils work, if you get one that has a greater output it will require a greater input (either current or voltage). Anything hotter means that you need to upgrade everything in the electrical path from the battery to the coil.
If the car is stock the best thing that you can do for reliability is to keep it that way.
I decided to go with a Pertronix 1 upgrade to electronic ignition for the distributor and add a flame thrower coil. I will keep the old parts just in case I have any issues.
I did the flamethrower as well. Been good so far.
If is not too late, get the Pertronix II. The PI can burn out if you leave the key on with the car not running. PII won’t do that.
It has high reviews. I ordered the parts from Summit Racing. They had pretty good pricing.

I considered the Pertronix 2. I wasn’t interested in the Pertronix 3 at all. Thank you for the advice!
I’m running these.

And they seem to work well together
Pertronix has a Power Supply Relay Kit so module receives 12v that is required on Ignitor 2 and 3. It works on Ignitor as well. Good idea to add it. I have an Ignitor 2 with Flamethrower 2 coil with the power supply on my 351w and have been real happy with it.
